FAQ

EV charging basics

What is the difference between AC and DC charging?
AC charging sends alternating current to the vehicle's onboard charger, which converts it to direct current to fill the battery. It is slower and best for home, workplace and overnight charging. DC charging converts power in the station itself and delivers direct current straight to the battery, allowing much faster top-ups for public sites and fleets.
What does charger power (kW) mean in practice?
Kilowatts (kW) measure how much energy the charger can deliver per second. A 7 kW AC unit adds roughly 35–40 km of range per hour, while a 120–600 kW DC unit can add hundreds of kilometres in under an hour. Higher kW is ideal when drivers need fast turnarounds; lower kW is fine for longer parking periods.
How do I know which charging standard my EV uses?
Most EVs list the charging port type in the manual or on the charge flap. The common standards are CCS2 (widely used in Europe and Africa), GB/T (common in China), and NACS (used by Tesla in North America). Matching the connector is the first step; the vehicle's maximum DC charge rate then decides how fast it can actually charge.
Can solar and battery storage power an EV charger?
Yes. Pairing chargers with solar panels and battery storage (PV-ESS) lets you store solar energy during the day and use it to charge vehicles whenever needed. This reduces grid demand, lowers running costs, and keeps chargers working during outages — a key advantage for sites across Africa with variable grid supply.
Which Mammoth tier is right for my site?
Mini is for portable power, homes and small businesses; Midi is for city fleets, taxis, commercial parking and light commercial sites; Mega is for highways, public transport, logistics parks and large industrial solar-plus-storage projects. Our engineering team can size the exact configuration once you share your load profile, vehicle mix and grid conditions.
